Today we have a special guest waiting here from the beginning of our Program “PAROLANDO” (“TALKING”), as we have announced and Claudia who is very efficient is going introduce him, Aren´t you?
Of course…
The three schools of FOZ, “Martinez Otero” “Pilar” “Number 1 C.A.N.T.E.L.”, were witness during the last few months of a show where Magic and Mathematics, as it is clear that Mathematics has its Magic… (well this could be debated…?), With the name of Mathe-Magic, Antonio Pomares Olivares presented to the students several activities that he used numbers with a notorious and amazing results in such a way that the operations proved once more that Mathematics don´t have to be boring (well…?!) and not as difficult as some of us may think. We have here with us, Antonio Pomares Olivares who is going to explain us what it is his Mathe-Magia
Hello Antonio, now you have to talk in Galician…
No in the first place I want to apologise for not been able to speak in Galician
That´s alright, no problem
I don´t speak Galician (Non falo Galego)
Yes you do a little bit…!
But I was able to understand what you said
The Presentation The Wizard of FOZ is based in the Magic Squares, and for those of you who do not know what a Magic Square is I invite to those listening to have a paper and a pen ready and draw now a large square that fills the whole page and once you have drawn this large square in one page divide it in four equal parts… so now you have a large square divided in four equal parts… and now each of these four parts, divide them into four equal parts… meaning that at the end you are going to have a large square that fills all the page and has sixteen little squares (or cells). This will be a 4x4 Square. Magic Squares are not something new, they are really very ancient and are centuries old… the most simple one is the 3x3 and after that comes the 4x4 that we are going to do now… what is needed for Square to be Magic is that all its horizontal lines, vertical lines and 2 diagonal lines add up the same… in the 4x4 Magic Square the total sum of these lines is always 34
The innovation that I have done with The FOZ Magic Square…and I call it The FOZ Magic Square because it was born here in FOZ… I discover it last year playing with coloured magnets on the fridge door in my house… This innovation is that it  has colour The FOZ Magic Square numbers are coloured numbers… because I was playing with these coloured magnets as I wanted to make a coloured Sudoku and I couldn´t at first…and I was trying to place the colour magnets in such a way that not a colour was repeated… and in the end I was successful… then when I saw that I remembered the 4x4 Magic Square… where all add up the same… and I thought if it would be possible to do the colours and numbers together… and I was amazed to see that it was possible… then as those four colours: red, green blue and yellow can be transposed to the traditional Spanish deck of 48 cards because (the deck of 40 cards is not suitable) it must be de deck with 48 cards that has the eight´s and nine´s… because the suits in the deck has similar colours that are: green as CLUBS, red as CUPS, blue as SWORDS and yellow as GOLD…
So with the 48 deck of Spanish cards I make three Magic Squares where the addition is the same: The square on the left adds up to 22, the square on the centre adds up to 26 and the square on the right adds up to 30 and what I do in the Mathe-Magic Presentation The Wizard of FOZ is to move all the cards while they are face down, in such a way that…
…if you allow me, I will do here a demonstration… first I place the cards down in a shape of a cross… after I place one at the top and one at the bottom… this you cannot see…
P.P (of course in the radio this cannot…)
but the people here in the studio can see… and wondering what I am doing…
I have made a 4x4 square with the 16 coloured cards… but here we do not have a Magic Square yet, because there is not a single card in the right place, and I have to change all of them, moving them from place to another… this you cannot see… but here in the studio they are asking themselves what I am doing… simply moving the cards so I can explain you now what you can do with this piece of paper that I told you to have ready…
P.P. Let´s see if the people who are listening can understand… there are sixteen cards… there sixteen cells where the cards are placed face down… so we do not know what cards are… Antonio, simply moved the cards around you cannot see the cards… and now what..?
Well, now in your house can write at the bottom of the square, on the left you can write the number 4 that here can be seen as blue,
P.P. The 4 blue
…that is at the left corner at the bottom…
P.P. bottom corner
Bottom corner and on the top corner on the left you can place number 16, that here can be seen as red,
P.P. 16 red
And on the other corner on the right on top, you place the number 13 that here can been seen as green
P.P. 13 green
And after… there are two more cards that I am going to reveal… and you can guess the other 10 cards…!!
On the second line… on the second line, is the line underneath number 16
P.P. Horizontal… horizontal
Horizontal line, the third card… you put number 10 that is yellow…
P.P. It´s yellow
And after, under the 10, is the number 6 that is green
P.P. Yes… on the third line, on the third place is number 6, green, by the way you have to write with a pen under the numbers if you haven´t colours…
On the file on the top, I repeat, is the number 16 on the left… on the corner on the right is 13…
The third card on the second line is 10… under the 10 is the 6… and on the bottom left corner is the 4.
Then… as this Magic Square as it has colours, not only everything adds up the same… because all the horizontal lines add up to 34, and all columns also add up to 34, and the two diagonals they also add up to 34…
P.P. so it is like a Sudoku… similar to a Sudoku
This is really a Magic Square… but this Square has some more magic because also the four corners add up to 34 and the four numbers on the centre in a little 2x2 square in the middle add up to 34… and if you divide this square of 16 numbers… if you divide it in four equal parts… each quarter formed by 4 numbers they also add up to 34
P.P All add up to 34
The quarter on the top left add up to 34, the right one add up to 34, at the bottom add up to 34 and on the left also it adds up to 34
And all these groups of four cards or numbers that I said that add up to 34… add up to 34… add to 34… ALSO have not a colour repeated… and there are four colours: green, yellow, blue and red…
Then… knowing that all add up to 34 and no colour is repeated… then what you are trying… like in a Sudoku, guess the missing cards using the principle that what you know is the bridge towards what you do not know… and where we already know three cards in a group of four…
If we know three… like for example on the diagonal if you have copied the numbers as I told you… you will see that the diagonal from top to bottom, starting from number 13 that I told you it´s on the top right…
P.P. green colour
Green colour…then 10 yellow… followed by a card that we do not know what it is…(but very soon we are going to guess) and the other bottom corner diagonally opposite to the 13 is the number 4...
P.P. blue…
The 4 that is blue, yes…
The 13 green, 10 yellow… and 4 blue
Then we add up the known numbers 13 + 10 is 23 + 4 is 27 minus from 34 that is the constant sum of the Square is 7… that has to be red, because is the missing colour.
And this is the magic that the children do in the school and like so much…
P.P. Antonio we have a limited time… we would like that we tell us… even if we cannot solve all the magic square as it will take too long, some things… there are some questions that Claudia wants to ask you… like for example
Claudia for example, to present yourself, tell us a little about yourself, what do you do, where do you live…
Well I live… now I am retired, I am 66 years old, I have lived many years in England… in London… now I am retired… I am from Alicante, my wife is from FOZ, that is why I am in FOZ and that is why this Square´s name is The FOZ Magic Square, because it was born in our house here in FOZ… I live in three places: I live here in FOZ, I live in Alicante and I live in London and sometimes I also go to Japan because I have a son in Japan and I have two grandchildren… I would very much like to learn Galician, but…for the time being I am learning Japanese
P.P I rather prefer the Galician that´s more easy… let´s see more questions for Antonio.
Claudia Why did you decide to this Mathe-Magic Presentation?
P.P. The idea… How did came about?
Well the idea… As I told you at the beginning, I was playing with coloured magnets in my house I found this… I always liked numbers… I like to do sudokus and mathematics puzzles like that… although my profession was not a mathematician or teacher or nothing like that… I worked many years in England at the Post Office… but I like numbers… and when I saw the Magic Square made with colours… because there have always been Magic Squares throughout the ages… since many, many centuries… they are very ancient… but not with colour, this is an innovation that up to recently was not known… and when I saw this I realise that this had a potential as entertainment and educational, by using the Spanish deck  of cards… because the traditional Spanish deck has 48 cards… so 16 + 16 is 32 + 16 is 48 so with a Spanish deck three Foz Magic Squares can be made. Then I thought that children could be taught numbers in a playful and enjoyable manner that will motivate them… motivate them to learn the numbers and practice the numbers… and I have realised during the little time that I have been with the children that they like it very much… and even those who do not yet know how to add… I realise… like for example…on one occasion a little girl, … she did not know how to add, so then she will tell me the card´s colour…she would say: it´s RED… and the brother who was older and could add will tell me is number 12…
He will tell me the number and she will tell me the colour…
She knew the colour… and she did not know the number, because she did not know how to add, but she KNEW that his brother knew the card number because he knew how to add….
So then this little spark… this realisation, can be something that it will inspire and motivate to pay a little more attention with the numbers… because… with numbers you CAN do Magic…!
P.P. Let´s see Maria, that you also have some questions.
Maria For what age group is the Mathe-Magic relevant
P.P. For what school year
Well… Their ability to add is needed and it´s essential… although as I have said before… those who cannot add can tell the colours… but I would say from 7 years onwards… they begin to show an interest in this… and really, the Mathe-Magic Presentation The Wizard of FOZ lasts one hour… because they have to tell 30 cards and then I repeat it again…(another 30 cards) and to keep the attention of a child for one hour is not easy… but they are interested and they like it.
Maria: What was the reaction of the children that participated in this show?
Well… it was a surprise… a DOUBLE surprise… the first surprise was to see how I could tell the numbers even-though the cards were face down…
P.P. It´s Magic!!!
That´s it, it’s MAGIC!!... that was the first surprise… but the SECOND surprise was. Even greater surprise was to see and realise that they, THEMSELVES could tell the card… and do Magic because when they could tell the card, some of them will come to the front and will reveal the card, turning it face up and they did the Magic… and that it gives them certain satisfaction and certain power to be able to say… well, I can do Magic… Numbers are useful, after all!
P.P. I would like to interrupt a moment before Maria and Claudia, carry on, because I have surprise for Antonio… that I did NOT told him during the trip to come here… what happens that this morning, when I was in my house, the mobile rung… a new mobile that I have as the other one is broken…
Claudia (He doesn´t stop showing off about his mobile… He has talk about his new mobile three or four times!)
P.P. and on the mobile screen was a strange number… a very strange number…a  long number… very strange… I do not remember if it began with 84 no… NOT 84 it began with two digits… and a voice with an English accent like… told me Hello, are you Pepe Peino, I am calling you from Japan, and he told me… Today you are going to interview a man, isn´t it? Antonio… (I forgot the surname now…)
POMARES
P.P. Antonio Pomares, well, look give him from me a big strong HUG with lots of love because he was the one who taught me the most about Mathematics (He said that his name was Angel… so Antonio… let´s see who is Angel?)
Angel…???
P.P. Angel, I thought he told me…
No… is my son who spoke… then he is PABLO…
P.P. Ah… Pablo, I´m sorry
I was confused when you said Angel… because…
P.P. I´m SORRY
He is my son and YES, he is in Japan
P.P. Well it was a surprise for me… because never no one called me from Japan…
It has been also a surprise for me…
P.P. so really… He sends you a HUG… I don´t know how he found about it… but he said I want to send him a very big BIG loving HUG because ever since we were little he would teach us Mathematics…
This is true, YES…
P.P. It was thank to him that I learn the most in Mathematics…
Yes it is the truth… and actually it has been useful to him as he works in a very important bank there in Japan, in Goldham Sachs… and he is doing ver well…
It´s the truth… I taught him… like my own father taught me… the magic squares.
I remember that when they were small and I took them to the school (as I mentioned earlier), we were adding the car registration numbers… the parked car registration numbers that we saw… they have to sum the numbers, my daughter and my son… on the way to school…
PP they will have to be good at numbers and become good mathematicians…
Well what more questions do we have, let´s see…
Maria Do you think the students find Mathematics as a difficult and boring subject?
PP well I think that for Claudia it is…
Maria and me also…
It is possible that sometimes Mathematics may seem boring… the truth is that even for me, I found some parts of Mathematics boring… but this is about the most simple part… that is Arithmetic… and this is what is required from children… it is expected that when they finish their schooling they will know how to read, how to write and simple Arithmetic calculations (adding, subtracting, multiplication and division), as in the old days people use to say.
PP What it is really useful for one´s life
What I have noticed is that, nowadays (is not only something that I have noticed here in Spain, but also it happens in England) now children do not know how to add like we knew… like I knew when I was at school as a small child… now they don´t have this mental agility… when I was a small boy, at my home we played ludo, we played monopoly, we played dominos…
Those were games that we have to count… we had to add… we played cards and all this helps to get a certain mental agility… when playing ludo… …you sometimes count 10… after I kill you and count 20… and I kill you again…(double killing) and count another 20 and so on…
But all these kind of games, nowadays are not played at home… because there are other things… computers…and the calculator is used… too much use of calculators… far to much…
PP That is what all teachers say, isn´t it?
Maria: They don´t let us
PP Don´t allow calculators…
PP As Antonio is saying that is better to use your head than your calculator…
Let´s see more questions…
Maria For you the Maths has Magic?
What… what are you saying?
PP Mathematics have Magic?
Well… here with the Magic Square Presentation, they do have Magic.. it is something that I cannot help feeling amazed by it
PP The Pythagorists The people who followed Pythagoras that the whole world was made up with numbers… that everything was numbers
Well… It seems that even Music is made up of numbers… I do not understand much about music but… it is said that in music is all numbers…
PP Yes the music notes… the duration of the notes… one lasts 2 another lasts 4…
Exactly
Well a few more questions and we let you have a rest Antonio…
Very well
Maria What part of Mathematics is your favourite, Arithmetic, Trigonometry…?
Arithmetic… the simple numbers… the simple numbers
Maria What is your opinion about the way in which Maths are taught in the schools… do you think that it is well taught or there is a better way to do it?
To tell you the truth… I do not know because I do not know how they teach Maths here in Spain, because I have lived many years in England and I do not know how it is done today… the only thing I know is that the children may be taught how to add… but they do not know how to add as when I was a little boy…
Maria if they could make them more appealing and enjoyable…
PP enjoyable… Antonio, makes them enjoyable…
PP Antonio was telling us before beginning the program that you were planning to do an activity in Finland isn´t it?
Well I am trying to promote this… Firstly I have made I web page (I shouldn´t forget you to tell the name is cuadradomagicodefoz.com and here in this web page you can download an Excel file that I have made with all these Magic Squares  and you can make with the Spanish deck of cards with these six cards that are shown in each square and the after you can do like a solitaire at your own home… or you can play with another person …because as there is 6 cards shown in each square that´s a total of 18 cards shown… and 30 missing cards to be placed… so these 30 cards if playing with a friend, can be distributed among the two players (fifteen cards each) and one place a card… then the other one place another card… and you play like this alternatively, like with the domino… now is my turn… now is your turn…
PP you play alternatively yes… where do you have this web page?
Cuadradomagicodefoz.com
PP so people listening can remember: cuadradomagicodefoz (all joined together) . (dot) com
PP Matias here gets upset because so many things you have to pay but this download is completely FREE isn´t it?
Yes this is completely free… I am retired now and I live from my pension… and this I do completely free the same with the presentation that I do in the schools…or any Fiesta… if someone would like that I go to his village or school…. Or a birthday party or whatever… for the sake of the children entertainment or even in an Old people´s home or Residence… for old people also… I am willing and ready to go… the only thing I ask is that transport is provided when needed… because I do not have a driving licence…
PP there is someone here with the same situation…
Then I have these cards that you have seen here in small size, but I also have them in larger size (A5), and I have made a large wooden board that measures 2.80 metres wide and it is divided in three equal parts and each sections can be folded for easy transport and can be placed inside a car and I will go to anyplace they take me to do the Magic Presentation The Wizard of FOZ… it lasts about one hour…
Maria you could come to our College
Whenever you are ready I am ready…
PP By the way there is also here a Residence of Old people where Pepe lives… another of our collaborators… maybe today you find two or three places where you can go…
Yes I am planning to do this in FOZ old people´s home also… in September…
PP so Pepe de Xerman… what is your opinion?
PX We will be in touch with you about this…
PP I can be in touch with Antonio by e-mail (the telephone number I already have) and he will answer… so if we send him an e-mail he will answer
PX well it is a good idea worth following…
PP we will propose this to Vegoña… so he can…
PX Vegoña comes back on the 15
PX I will tell her today or tomorrow
PP One question that we have here prepared Claudia for you
PP I never was able to teach Mathematics… would you like some day to teach Mathematics Antonio?
I like better languages… As I am learning Japanese I have several Japanese friends (language exchange partners) to whom I teach English or Spanish and they teach me Japanese… and I have noticed that I like… I like very much to teach languages… I like to teach… I would have liked to be a teacher… but my life and destiny was not meant to be like this so… but now that I am retired and have the time… well yes… I am learning Japanese and I am teaching English and Spanish…
Maria Do you intend to continue with this Magic Presentation for a long time?
Well… I think so…
The truth is that the FOZ Magic Square has its own dynamics… and I do not know if you know the words of Miguel de Unamuno who said: That Cervantes did not create Don Quixot (that it happened the other way round) it was Don Quixote who created Cervantes… so in the same way it was not me who has invented this Magic Square… but this Magic Square has invented me… and The FOZ Magic Square now pushes me to do things that before I would never dream of doing like for example I never thought I would come here to a radio interview to talk about these things… … or do a Magic Presentation in public… but yes… the project that I have is to finish the web page that I am making… well it is not me, really a Japanese friend of mine is doing it for me, Chieko Miyatake,… and Chieko is helping me to do the web page because I do not understand anything about web pages… so first we are doing it in Spanish and my intention is to translate it to English, after to French and possibly into Japanese as well… and once this page is done in these languages I plan to promote this web page to the Culture Ministries of several countries and I have thought about Finland in particular, because Finland is a country where Education is very important and they think a lot about children´s education… I believe that even they teach them Spanish in the schools and they show Spanish TV programs (Children Programs that Spanish children see here on TV) …are shown in Finland so the children can learn Spanish… so I would very much like that the Spanish numbers be taught with the FOZ Magic Square… and that will also would promote FOZ
PP Promote FOZ in the world
Exactly
Maria Can the mathematicians solve the present crisis… what advice can you give?
PP Will you try to solve the economic crisis…?
Well…he, he…
This is more complicated…
This is more complicated… if we have more time… I will show you something I did with the cards the other day…
PP but we only have two minutes left
But it is possible… it is possible… but I do not think it is a question of Mathematics or economics… I think that it is a question of political will… all this can be solved very easily…
PP with a little bit of GOOD will, let´s call it like that…
PP well we are about to finish… now that you have began talking in the radio… do you think that you could make a radio program?  Would you like to continue in the world of the radio… like for example… Pepe de German, here, came one day as a visitor and he stayed with us ever since… Matias also, came one day as a visitor and he stayed with us… I do not know if Claudia and Maria will stay with us…but do you imagine yourself someday making a radio program?
No, NOT really and I think that I will not have the time because I am very busy with what I am doing at the moment… if I may… I would like… as there is little time left… I would like to say something… it´s the reflexion I always do in the schools when I talk to the children… towards the end of the show, I always tell them that I remember that when I was a little boy (about their age), and went to the school, my father will sometimes go to speak to the teachers to get my report and he will ask the teachers –how is Antonio doing? And the teachers always said the same thing: he is doing well… BUT he could do better… so I tell the children – maybe you are told the same thing… you are doing well… but you could do better
With the Magic Square the same thing happened… because as I have explained this Magic Square was quite good… (in black and white)  …but it could be better… now it has colour… now is The FOZ Magic Square… and I tell all the children that if they are doing well… they could do even better  if they try to do it better… if they can…
PP Well to finish Antonio, there is a question that we always ask to all our guests… that it might be problematic… let´s see Claudia or Maria who is going to ask it
Claudia: well… what three things will take with you to a desert island
What three things I will take to…?
Claudia: A desert island
PP what three things…
To a desert island!
PP it´s very important
PP you have to choose three things from the world to take it with you
PP I do not know if Marisol´s cakes that are here on the table…
PP … in case there was nothing to eat…
Well… right now I do not know…
PP it´s a difficult question
Probably I will take a book… (I do not know which one…) pencil and paper

PP to do the square
To do the squares… pencil and paper to write
PP and a book

A book to read and paper and a pencil to write
If I am going to be there always… as men looks forward to achieve inmortality some how… I will write down saying who I was and that I was there and the things that happened to me…

A book, pencil and paper.
PP Well that was a good answer

PP Well now what is left to do is to thank Antonio for coming here…
You will stay till the end
Yes of course
I cannot return to FOZ by myself
Thank you very much
Well I think with this we finish
What is left is… I want to congratulate you because it is a very nice initiative… as those who choose to teach know that sometimes it can be boring
Matias: This subjects that can be made more joyful are always welcomed
Matias: It is always a good thing
PP is there that Claudia and Maria wish to say to Antonio
Claudia… well that you continue teaching so well…
Many thanks
And please do come to our college…
PP I am sure that he will
YES of course… if you bring me here… you have to bring me …
PP surely he will… because you are going to stay in FOZ until after Christmas…?
NO, Christmas we always spend it in London as I have family there
PP and are you making a trip to Japan soon?
They are coming from Japan… My son is going to come
PP Pablo
Yes Pablo is going to come… …and my two grandsons
Matias. Pablo… and not Angel
PP Forgive me Pablo for getting your name wrong
Claudia: I don´t think that in Japan he will be listening to Radio Valedouro
PP well if we put this on the Internet… he will be able to listen to this program…
Thank you very much
Thank you Antonio, well we have to continue… well Claudia and Maria…?
